NemID was created in 2010 as part of a progressive digitization strategy and was discontinued in October 2023. In 2021, eleven years after NemID's launch, the Danish Digitalization Agency (Danske Digitaliseringsstyrelsen), together with Finans Danmark, developed MitID to address new challenges and provide an improved solution. The goal was to ensure Denmark’s national digital identity infrastructure and provide Danish society with a more resilient eID solution.
Denmark’s essential digital identity solution
Denmark introduced MitID to businesses and Danish citizens in May 2021. The migration process, which spanned six months from summer 2021 to the end of the year, ensured that public authorities and organizations supported both systems. This seamless approach allowed Danish citizens to gradually adapt to MitID.
Today, Danish citizens can utilize MitID for a wide range of services, including online banking and interactions with government agencies. MitID has become an integral part of daily life, significantly enhancing online security nationwide.
