A recent investigation uncovered a service called OnlyFake, which uses generative AI to create highly realistic government-issued documents—ranging from passports and driver’s licenses to bank statements—in under five minutes.  

These fakes are convincing enough to pass identity verification systems used by banks, crypto exchanges, and online platforms. The service reportedly generated hundreds of fraudulent IDs that successfully bypassed automated Know Your Customer (KYC) checks by mimicking authentic document textures, lighting, and fonts—essentially fooling both human reviewers and AI-based scanners. 

Another recent case from South Korea involved a North Korea-linked hacking group, Kimsuky, that used ChatGPT to generate deepfake military ID cards. These fake IDs were embedded in phishing emails impersonating South Korean defense institutions, targeting journalists, researchers, and human rights advocates. By framing prompts as “sample designs for legitimate purposes,” the hackers bypassed AI safeguards and produced highly convincing ID mock-ups.  

This case underscores how generative AI has lowered the barrier to entry for sophisticated fraud, enabling attackers to combine fake documents with deceptive emails, calls, and even video to reinforce their scams.  


Understanding how AI works in digital identity verification

Identity verification is the process of confirming a person’s identity. Here, technology provides advantages, especially when it comes to security of digital identity verification.

The acquisition of legitimate identity documents for fraudulent purposes has become alarmingly accessible, with prices as low as $5 for a photo of a genuine document. This presents a formidable challenge for ID scanning technologies, which struggle to identify authentic documents being misused by impostors. 


Deepfakes and AI-driven fraud are spreading quickly

AI-generated impersonations, ranging from deep-fake videos to voice cloning, are now mainstream tactics. Identity theft surged, with the United States reporting $12.5 billion in related consumer fraud losses in 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year. Against this backdrop, traditional checks like image uploads from device galleries are increasingly ineffective.
